Paediatric speech pathology services
At Stone Speech Pathology, we provide comprehensive, evidence-based speech pathology services for children and young people, supporting their communication, learning, participation and connection with others.
Our paediatric speech pathology services support children across a broad range of communication needs, including:
- Speech sound development – supporting children who may be difficult to understand or have difficulty producing particular speech sounds.
- Language development – supporting understanding and use of spoken language, including vocabulary, grammar, following instructions and expressing ideas.
- Early communication – supporting infants, toddlers and young children to develop foundational communication, interaction and play skills.
- Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) – supporting children who communicate using a combination of speech, gestures, signs, visuals and communication devices.
- Literacy – supporting the development of phonological awareness, reading, spelling and written language skills.
- Fluency – assessment and support for children who stutter or experience differences in the flow of their speech.
- Social communication – supporting children to develop communication skills that help them connect, participate and build relationships with others.
- Mealtime and swallowing – assessment and support for children experiencing feeding, eating, drinking or swallowing difficulties.
Guided by our values of Curiosity, Compassion, Belonging and Growth, we take the time to understand each child as an individual. Our speech pathologists work collaboratively with children, families, educators and other important people in their lives to develop practical, strengths-based supports that can be embedded into everyday routines and environments.
Services are available in clinic, within schools and education settings, in the community, via telehealth and through outreach services, depending on the individual needs of the child and family.
Adult speech pathology services
At Stone Speech Pathology, we provide evidence-based, person-centred speech pathology services for adults experiencing changes or difficulties with communication, cognition, eating, drinking and swallowing. Our supports are tailored to each person’s individual needs, goals, everyday environments and the people who are important to them.
Our adult speech pathology services include:
- Mealtime and swallowing support – assessment and intervention for adults experiencing difficulties with eating, drinking, chewing or swallowing, with a focus on supporting safety, comfort, choice and quality of life at mealtimes.
- Communication support – assessment and intervention for adults experiencing difficulties with speech, language or functional communication, including people with acquired or lifelong communication needs.
- Cognitive-communication support – supporting communication difficulties associated with changes in attention, memory, processing, organisation, problem-solving and executive functioning that may affect everyday conversations, relationships, work and community participation.
- Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) – assessment, trials and ongoing support for people who may benefit from communication systems, devices, visual supports or other alternative ways of communicating.
- Communication partner training – practical training and coaching for family members, support workers, carers, disability support teams and other important communication partners to help create supportive and accessible communication environments.
- Capacity building and team training – working collaboratively with families, support teams and other professionals to develop consistent communication and mealtime strategies that can be embedded into everyday routines.
Guided by our values of Curiosity, Compassion, Belonging and Growth, we focus on understanding the whole person and supporting communication, connection, independence and meaningful participation in everyday life.
Autism assessments
At Stone Speech Pathology, we offer Consensus Team Diagnostic Evaluation (CTDE) Autism assessments for children and young people. Our assessments follow a comprehensive, evidence-based process designed to develop a detailed understanding of each individual’s strengths, differences, developmental profile and support needs.
Our Autism assessments are completed using a multidisciplinary consensus team approach, bringing together appropriately qualified clinicians to consider information from multiple sources. The assessment process may include developmental and family history, questionnaires, observations, standardised assessment tools and information from important people and environments in the child or young person’s life, such as family members, educators and other treating professionals.
Our approach is neurodiversity-affirming and strengths-based. We recognise that Autism can present differently for every person and aim to provide an assessment experience where children, young people and their families feel understood, respected and supported.
Following assessment, families receive clear feedback regarding the assessment findings, alongside practical recommendations to support the individual’s communication, participation, learning and everyday life. Where appropriate, recommendations may also assist families, education teams and other professionals to identify suitable supports and next steps.
Individuals and families are encouraged to discuss their child’s development and any concerns with their treating medical professional and to explore whether they may be eligible for Medicare rebates associated with the Autism assessment process.
Guided by our values of Curiosity, Compassion, Belonging and Growth, our goal is to make the assessment process collaborative, respectful and focused on developing a meaningful understanding of the individual — not simply reaching a diagnosis.
